Teeth and Truth

Ever feel like Emerson, the kiddo who wrote this note to the Tooth Fairy?  I do, especially when I foul my best intentions with faulty follow-through.  Elated over a moment of self-controlled decision making over one appetite's urge or impulse, only to be deflated a moment later having mindlessly given into another.  Yep, these are "face-palm" moments.

The truth is that we are fallible beings with incessant inspiration to chase our appetites.  It's not easy being human, and all people are all ever only human, ya know.

So, what's a person to do in these moments?
  • Gain perspective:  see what it was that deterred you from your stated path.  Was it a thought, a feeling, a suggestion, a commercial, a memory, or just noontime?
  • Give mercy:  yes, you "gave into" the urge/impulse.  No, the consequence doesn't go away simply because of your admission or contrition of heart; but you can get better traction in the right direction when you cease the self-flagellation and simply forgive yourself for the slip.
  • Grow wisdom:  this stimulus will come around again "like a bad penny."  What strategies might you employ to give you pause for consideration rather than reacting without regard to your goals?
Today is not your story's last page, most likely.  Pick up the pieces and move forward.

Jotting with Johnna
The only true failure is refusal to try again, so how will you take your palm off your forehead in those face-palm moments and put your energy to more productive action?

Remember:  you are so very worthy of the compassion it takes to kindly redirect yourself toward that which brings about your best life.

Stay tuned.  Stay focused.  Stay well.
